end of year reflection-charlie segar

Charlie Segar

I have learned a lot this term in art. I think I have learned most about what I am good at and where I need to improve in order to become a more productive and effective artist. I have always found more success when drawing but the nature of the candy project made painting more appealing for me. My struggles all came in the planning and subsequent procrastinating process as I tried to start every piece. Also, I have learned that I can draw very easily while looking at something but when coming up with the image, my ability to scale and make things realistic looking is much worse. I think I have improved as an artist because I now know a lot more about what I need to do to find success. I now know my strengths, which are in plain 2d drawing, and I know my weaknesses, in shading and scale.

thanks for a fun term.

all art pieces and descriptions of them--charlie segar

This is the drawing of a newspaper article. In this picture I showed the incident when Quentin Richardson attacked Pierce and Garnett after Pierce had injured his shouldier. I wanted to show a defending position on Garnett and a vulnerable position for Pierce. I wanted to show Richardson looking angry and like he was verbally attacking Pierce. I think I did a good job of showing their facial expressions but I should have made more of a background and Pierc looks like hes floating.

This is my painting of the candy arrangement. I usually don't like painting but I enjoyed this project because of the freedom in what we are allowed to set up. I would have thought about shadows earlier if I did it again.

this is a painting based on my memory of the house i go to on marthas vineyard. In this picture i wanted to show the place and different memories I have from it. I was able to show the house well but by the time I was done doing that I had worked on it for a while and I never really added the memories to the picture

Planning for the news story project-charlie segar

Article that I chose:http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/19/sports/basketball/19rhoden.html

I chose this article because it is something that can be seen and illustrated in two ways. As a Celtics fan and somebody that appreciates Garnett's intensity the punishment seems unfair but from the perspective of a person that is not a Celtics fan and did not see it happen, it makes the Celtics seem like a team with bad sportsmanship.

Drawing from Observation: Placement and Proportion

I believe biggest weakness in art is my lack of patience. This causes problems with planning and when drawing things where scale is very important. I tend to start and speed up and eventually, because of small errors the scale ends up being terrible. When doing these drawings I started with a steady approach but eventually small mistakes led to other small mistakes and the scale became inaccurate. My success in these projects came from drawing the shapes themselves. Although they were not always in the right place, I was happy with the appearance of most of my shapes. The final outcome, in my opinion, was decent. I feel that with practice and maybe a little more focus my ability to draw things to scale will improve a lot.

I felt more comfortable drawing the things on the list. Usually I prefer to draw things while observing them but in this instance I felt more natural when creating the drawing off of the ideas rather then the images. The things that were on my desk were kind of boring to draw so there was no excitement in deciding how to draw things it was essentially just copying them onto paper.
